Everyone knows Facebook. But of course, everything connected online is susceptible to attacks. How can you practice safe cybersecurity practices while using Facebook or any other social media platform?
Let us discuss these safety tips below.
Cybersecurity Facebook: How to Protect Account
1. Use a Strong Password
Don’t use personal information such as your birth date, and don’t use the same password for every website you use. Hackers can easily guess your password if they have just one piece of information about you.
For example, you can create a strong password and use a combination of numbers, uppercase and lowercase letters, and symbols. Lastly, use at least 10 characters.
2. Avoid Public Wifi
Do not access any accounts or log into any bank accounts through public wifi. Hackers can hack into your account by compromising public wifi. It is better to have a mobile hotspot so that you can connect your laptop to the internet using your phone’s mobile data connection.
3. Check Your Privacy Settings on Facebook
Make sure to check the privacy settings on Facebook regularly because these settings may change without notice. Adjust these settings to fit your preferences concerning who can see your posts.
4. Don’t Click Suspicious Links
If you get any suspicious links in your inbox or anywhere else on Facebook, do not click them. These links might be disguised as safe links but are malicious.
You should always check if the URL of a link is right before clicking it by hovering over it with the mouse pointer or by opening it in another tab or window. Just make sure that the URL begins with “HTTP” and ends with “.com” or “.co” which means that it is a genuine website.
You also have to check where the link will lead you to. It leads you to an unfamiliar website with no information about the company behind it, then you should be very careful in clicking that link because it could be a link that will infect your computer with malware.
5. Watch Out for Scams
One big problem when using social media platforms like Facebook is a scam. Scammers are everywhere, waiting for you to click one of their malicious links or download one of their malicious files and enter confidential information such as bank account numbers, social security numbers, credit card numbers, etc.
Always remember that if something looks too good to be true, then it probably is. Be cautious when downloading programs from websites because they might contain malware that could steal your confidential personal information or access all of your passwords saved in different browsers.
Protect Yourself Online!
Connecting with the world through social media like Facebook is a great way to connect with others. However, you have to be very careful when online because there are a lot of hackers out there who are waiting for you to make a mistake just so they can use it against you.
